A headache is one of the most common ailments experienced by people. Virtually everyone experiences a headache some time or the other. The headache may be due to exposure to the hot sun or due to cold. Headaches can come when you are stressed or tense. It may be a secondary effect of some other ailment like the flu or the common cold. Headaches usually remain for some time and resolve on their own. The problem arises when headaches occur frequently or bring it with so much pain and discomfort that it affects a person’s normal routine. This is when treatment is required.
Ayurveda recognizes the role of doshas in causing headache. Imbalance in the doshas can lead to headaches. A combination of the doshas like vata and pitta can occur. This can lead to a headache. There are primarily three types of headaches: tension, migraine, and sinus.
Tension headaches are caused due to an imbalance in vata dosha. Stress, improper diet, lack of sleep, eyestrain, and following an unhealthy lifestyle can cause vata imbalance. This causes tension headaches that feel like a tight band around the head. A diet that has more of sweet, sour, and salty food is advised to pacify vata. Reducing exercise, drinking lot of water, and avoiding stimulants can help in relief from tension headaches.
Migraine headaches happen due to imbalance in pitta and vata. When the pitta dosha, which is hot has an imbalance, it causes burning pain with a sharp pain with auras or lights manifesting itself. Digestive problems, weakness in digestive agni leading to accumulation of ama or toxins, and pollution are causes of migraine headache. Incorporating more of sweet and bitter foods in the diet, avoiding cold, dry foods, relaxing, and using essential oils for massage can help alleviate symptoms of migraine headache.
Sinus headache happens due to Kapha and vata imbalance. This happens because of the wet and heavy kapha that blocks the sinuses. Toxins in the body, weakness in the immune system, lack of exercise, overeating, consuming cold foods are all causes of sinus headaches. Astringent foods that pacify kapha need to be consumed. Fresh air and exposure to the sun can reduce the headache. Light exercise and steam inhalation is helpful.
Apart from all these, using the ayurvedic headache balms can be helpful in alleviating the symptoms of headaches, whatever may be the cause. Abhyanga or self-massage using an oil prescribed by an ayurvedic physician and practicing the right kind of yoga asanas can be very helpful in the treatment of headaches of different types
There are two causes of headaches – primary and secondary. Primary headaches occur due to a specific problem. This can be a migraine headache that occurs frequently. It is an attack that can occur for a few hours or even days together. Some people even see flashes of light or an aura. Cluster headaches are extremely painful and happen in cluster periods. Tension headaches are mild headaches that feel like a band surrounding the head. There is a dull ache in this type of headache.
Secondary headaches occur due to an underlying health condition. Some of the causes of a secondary headache may be:
Blood clot in the brain.
A tumor in the brain.
A concussion to the head due to injury.
Toothache or gum infection.
The flu or the common cold.
Allergy to certain substances.
The effect of excess medication.
High blood pressure.
Infection in the ear.
Hangover due to excess alcohol consumption.
The underlying cause needs to be treated to treat a secondary headache.
