What are Rashes?
MARCH 22, 2024

Introduction:

Scales, Bumps and blisters.! Numerous factors can contribute to the formation of a rash on your skin. Similarly, each person will experience different symptoms depending on the causative factor. Your skin may develop a red, itchy or occasionally painful rash. Therefore, we must comprehend the underlying aetiology of a skin rash before treating it. For that, we must know more about 'Rashes' in general.

Definition

Patches of skin that appear swollen or inflamed are called a 'Rash'.In addition to being frequently irritating, rashes can appear differently on different skin tones with differences in colour and texture. Though commonly described as red, the colour gradient can go from purple to grey or white on darker skin tones. Multiple causative factors of a skin rash include bites, chickenpox, serious illnesses or medication allergies. If home remedies do not help, or if you experience additional symptoms like fever or dizziness, you're best advised to get medical care.

Common Skin Rash Types.

Commonly seen skin rash types include,

  • Contact dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Viral infections
  • Hives, or as
  • Eczema

Eczema.

eczema

Eczema is also known as Atopic dermatitis. It is characterised by a dry skin rash that itches and is covered in patches. It is seen as a frequent but non-contagious skin condition. Eczema symptoms may worsen if you come into contact with one of its allergens or irritants. It is rare for conditions of eczema to produce pain. If the patient risks breaking the skin's surface while scratching or getting a painful sore or an open rash, it may result in pain due to possible infections. Certain varieties of eczema, such as contact dermatitis, are considered painful and cause a burning sensation over the affected area. There is no known cure yet for eczema and its resultant skin rashes; however, there are therapies to assist the patient in managing the symptoms.

Hives.

hives

They are also known as urticaria and are characterised by raised, itchy, red-coloured skin welts. They are commonly infected when you are allergic to airborne factors or insect stings. Other etiological factors noticed include temperature variations and are also considered bacterial skin rash. They are a type of skin-surface swelling that develops due to allergic reactions. In addition to being extremely itchy, hives can often produce a burning sensation or stings. They range from the size of a dinner plate to as small as a fingertip. Hives can occasionally combine to create larger patches known as plaques. Hives may be visible for several days or longer but usually go away in a day or two.

Contact dermatitis.

contact dermatitis

Rashes appear when the body comes in contact with one of its allergens. The allergens include certain fragrances or foods, preservatives, Nickel, pollens, detergents, chemicals, etc. Anyone can develop contact dermatitis rash from a newborn to an adult over time. Skin allergy responses may originate from the first exposure or the series of exposures. Individuals who work in professions that frequently expose them to allergens or irritable substances are likelier to develop contact dermatitis rash.

Granuloma annulare.

Granuloma annulare is a benign (not contagious to other body parts) condition of the skin Lichen Planus results in skin rashes simultaneously appearing on one or more body areas. It might impact one frequently seen to be chronic (long-lasting). Common symptoms include a lump under the skin or a raised and discoloured skin rash alongside inflammation of the affected area. Rashes typically appear on your hands, feet, elbows, and forearms.

Although it can affect people of different ages, granuloma annulare typically affects children and young adults. It impacts twice as many women and individuals assigned as female at birth than it does in males and individuals identified as male at birth.

Lichen planus.

lichen planus

Lichen Planus results in skin rashes appearing on one or more areas of the body simultaneously. It might impact one of the following body parts:

  • Skin surface.
  • Oral mucosa (inside).
  • Scalp (Usually covered in hair)
  • Nails, Penis, vagina, and vulvar regions.

Although lichen planus is not an autoimmune disease, it can result in a similar reaction in the body. The skin becomes inflamed upon infection; your immune system targets specific bodily components rather than defending the body against external invaders like germs or viruses.

Pityriasis rosea.

Pityriasis rosea is a type of skin rash that frequently starts as an oval patch, mainly over the back, chest, abdomen or face. This disease pattern is called a 'herald patch'; its diameter can reach up to 4 inches (around 10 cm). Smaller dots that resemble drooping pine tree branches appear in later stages. It sweeps out from the body's centre and gets itchy over time.

Although the lichen type of skin rash can occur at any age, pityriasis rosea is most frequently observed in those between the ages of 10 and 35. It's mostly gone on its own in around ten weeks.

Psoriasis.

psoriasis

Eczema and psoriasis rash are two different skin conditions with almost similar symptoms. Both diseases have itching, redness and discoloured skin as their primary signs.

Psoriasis rash is an inflammatory condition. Symptoms of Psoriasis rashes include thickened skin, scaly patches and skin discolouration. We refer to the thick, scaly patches formed as plaques. It can flare up in progressed stages. In most people, psoriasis rashes affect only a tiny portion of the skin. But in extreme cases, a significant portion of the body is seen to be covered in connected plaques.

Diagnosing Rashes.

A skin rash can have different causes, making its diagnosis difficult. Hence, the examination of rashes can include the following:

  • Biopsy:

It is carried out to look for bacteria or viruses in the affected area. The healthcare professional collects tiny samples (biopsy) of the affected skin area and sends them to the laboratory for further findings.

  • Allergy test:

Include prick tests to identify urticaria and patch tests to determine contact dermatitis. The physician exposes your skin to small amounts of possible allergens to observe and record the changes. It is identified as a known allergy if skin reactions like redness, swelling or rashes are noted.

  • Blood tests:

Blood tests are done to rule out antibodies circulating in the blood that are possibly causing skin conditions. Certain rashes could be part of systemic diseases and their manifestation. Hence, blood tests are carried out to rule out the same.

Home Care.

  • Cold Compress

cold compress

Filling an ice bag with ice cubes or dampening a cotton cloth with cold water is recommended to compress the cold.

Apply the cloth or the bag directly over the surface of your skin. (Applying the ice cubes directly to your skin is never advised).

Hold the ice pack to the skin until the itching subsides, and repeat as needed.

Cold compresses and ice cubes block the blood flow to an inflammatory region. Applying cold water or ice to a rash will help reduce swelling and inflammation and relieve the itching instantly. A cold bath or shower may also help the rashes that cover a more significant body region, which is challenging to treat with a single ice pack.

  • Aloe Vera

aleo vera

You can slice open an Aloe leaf directly and extract the gel to apply the same straight onto the afflicted area of the skin.

Commercial aloe preparations, which can be simpler to use, are available in drug stores. However, it is best to use fresh aloe.

Aloe vera has fantastic anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that help heal rashes, prevent infections, and relieve symptoms such as itching and redness.

  • Coconut Oil

coconut oil

Coconut oil is beneficial in skin rashes, aiding its antibacterial action and anti-inflammatory properties. They are found to be helpful in eczema-prone skin conditions and soothe pain.

baking soda

Soak one or two cups of baking soda in a tub of warm water. After rinsing the affected area in the solution, pat the rash dry and apply a suitable coolant.

The chemical composition of baking soda functions as a buffer, maintaining the acid-alkali equilibrium in solutions. The same character of baking soda helps keep the skin's pH level on its topical application.

Treatment for Rashes.

Rashes may take a few days to several weeks to clear off. Hence, the treatments for skin rashes include:

  • Allergy drugs:

Anti-allergen drugs reduce symptoms of rashes, such as itching. These are consumed as oral antihistamines or as creams and lotions.

  • Immunosuppressants

Immunosuppressants help curb skin rashes, reddening, and instant swellings, which may result from hyper-allergic and autoimmune conditions

    Baths with oatmeal:

Cold baths and oatmeals are highly beneficial for Rashes. Adding colloidal oatmeal to the Rash area or incorporating the same into a warm bath will help soothe itchy, dry skin rashes.

  • Steroids:

Doctors recommend oral steroids or topical steroid creams if the symptoms of Rashes don't subside. Steroids are known to reduce itching and inflammation of the affected skin area.

  • Topical immunomodulators:

Topical immuno-modulators help to regulate the immune responses of the skin. These are highly useful in allergic dermatitis, lupus erythematosus, keratinization, etc.

Complications of Rashes.

  • Anaphylaxis:

Rashes can be the result of a severe allergic reaction. The same, when untreated or chronically aggravated, can potentially be fatal and lead to a condition known as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis results in the blockage of airways due to severe swelling of the inner walls (angioedema). A quick epinephrine injection is recommended in such cases to stop the progressive allergic reaction.

  • Infection:

Scratching the surface of an itchy rash can break open the skin, which leads to microbial entry into such an open rash. This, in turn, leads to potential risks of infection and further complications.

Conclusion:

The primary cause of a skin rash is what determines how much of an impact it has on one's body and life. While viruses and germs are complex to prevent in most diseases, you can cautiously avoid allergens and irritants that you are aware irritate you to stop rashes and possible other outcomes. Most rashes are bothersome but curable, regardless of the reason.

(a) Abhyanga: Herbal oils such as Neem oil and Brahmi oil can be topically massaged over the affected skin to fasten the healing process of rashes and prevent further infections. (b) Aloe vera in gel and juice (internally) works wonders by relieving inflamed skin and eruptions. (c) Lepana (pastes) using pitta dosha pacifying herbs such as Brahmi, Manjishta, Turmeric, Neem, Satavari, and Triphala helps to ease irritations by rashes. (d) Practise cooling baths and protect the skin from direct sun exposure to prevent Pitta dosha aggravation.

The skin serves as an organ for eliminating excess oils, heat, cellular wastes, etc. Pitta is the dosha that guards over the functions of the skin including sweating, colour, texture, and digestion of everything we apply externally over the skin surface. Whenever there is a dysfunction in the elimination of disruptive forces mentioned earlier by skin, it leads to aggravation of Pitta dosha as well as to inflammations and skin ailments such as dermatitis, psoriasis, skin ulcers, itching, canker sores, eczema, hives, etc.

Certain plants, like poison ivy, oak, etc, are the most commonly observed triggers. Household products like cosmetics, strong fragrances, hair dyes, lotions and soaps can also result in contact dermatitis. It’s essential to identify the trigger and avoid possible encounters with the same to keep the condition under control.
