Pregnancy for every woman, undoubtedly, is a period of immense joy coupled with anticipation and excitement! It is that magical phase that every woman awaits to have in her lifetime, for it brings a new life to the world.
All through these nine months, you are bound to wonder: So what is the baby doing inside the womb?
Scientists say that there are several amazing things your baby does inside: Responds to touch, recognizes taste & smell, develops a fine ear for certain sounds, practises breathing, yawning, smiling and could even cry. An unknown emotional mother-baby bond is formed in the initial months which strengthen as months pass by. The foetus is able to identify its mother’s sound. When mother talks or sings, the baby responds with a kick. But baby`s sound from the within is never heard.
The baby’s first cry, as soon as it is born, is the first sound ever heard. This is because of the baby’s very first exhalation of breath within 20 seconds after birth, considered auspicious even today. In fact the quality of the first cry is definitely worth taking into account. The quality, pitch and volume of the baby’s first cry can provide vital information about the well being of the newborn. Researchers from renowned universities say that the foetus is learning to communicate its needs or troubles, after birth, through crying. But the results do not clearly indicate whether the baby cries due to pain.
There exists many pregnancy folklore and myths relating to the cry from within the womb. It is said that in early stages, the foetus floats like a ‘Fish in the mother’s womb’ and later grows into a ‘Bird trapped in a cage’, where the movements are so restricted. This is said to cause traumatic experience inside the womb leading to foetal cry. Still some group of people believe that the foetus cries aloud due to fear of darkness. Some say foetus is unable to convey their hunger and cries out. While few others believe that the foetus remembers its death their previous life and cries inside the womb.
But does the baby ever cry inside? If yes, why can’t we hear the baby cry inside? – some common questions from expectant couple. Ayurveda tells you why.
“A child in the womb does not cry in as much as its mouth remains covered with the sheath of the placenta i.e. foetal membranes (Jarayu) and its throat is stuffed with Mucus (Kapha). The processes of respiration, sleeping and movement of the foetus in the womb are effected through those of its mother”.
Susruta Samhita/ Sarira Sthana/Verse 54-55
Ayurveda explains, although a functional lung is developed and present, there is no proper airflow which is necessary for the sound production. Hence we cannot hear the foetus cry. If the cry is still heard then it’s very rare! The expression of crying indicates the stage maturation of sensory reception of the foetus. Scientific research has demonstrated that the foetus cries silently inside the womb, a video recording of ultrasound of a foetus in third trimester proves this. This video displays some of the crying behavioural patterns like facial expression, irregular breathing, depressing of tongue and opening of the mouth but not an audible one.
