Upper respiratory infections affect your upper respiratory tract and they are some of the most common problems that people all over the world suffer from. The common cold is the most common type of URI. The other types of URIs include sinusitis, tonsillitis, rhinitis, pharyngitis, tracheobronchitis, and epiglottitis. Most of these have sub-types of infection and the causes depend on the sub-type.


Causes of sinusitis, rhinitis, and tonsillitis


The causes of common upper respiratory infections are as follows.


Sinusitis can be caused due to allergic rhinitis, the common cold, or a deviated septum. Another common cause is nasal polyps which are small growths in the nose’s lining. Chronic sinusitis can be caused because of other medical conditions such as immune system diseases. Allergies can lead to sinusitis as well.


Allergic rhinitis can be caused due to cockroach residue, pollen, dust mites, ragweed, and pet dander. Non-allergic rhinitis can be caused due to environmental irritants such as tobacco smoke, detergents, smog, and perfumes. Other causes of non-allergic rhinitis include certain medications, weather fluctuations, stress, URIs, certain medical conditions, and hormonal changes.

Ayurveda’s approach to respiratory problems


Breathing is essential for life. Any imbalance, if not addressed, will lead to a larger imbalance which will create more trouble. Ayurveda states that respiration is vital and excess of any of the three doshas can have an impact on the respiration tissues. Excess of vata can cause tissues to constrict in the throat or the nasal passages. It can lead to excess dryness in the respiratory tract and it can lead to breathlessness too. An excess of kapha can lead to phlegm and mucus production. It can lead to your body being cold and congestion in the body.


Moreover, excess kapha can lead to water retention and swelling in the respiratory tract.  Another problem of too much kapha in your system is stagnation. This means more imbalance can take place. An excess of vata and kapha can lead to chronic congestion problems due to the accumulation of mucus. When there is pitta imbalance due to excess pitta then inflammation is the result. This inflammation can be anywhere on the mouth, nasal passages, lungs or throat. Another problem with excess pitta is excess heat that causes an imbalance in the body.


When you have excess vata then you can try the vata-pacifying diet. This includes consuming salty, sweet, and sour tasting foods. Warm foods should be consumed and warming spices must be used for preparing meals. Adding ghee in your diet is beneficial and having your meals routinely will help pacify vata. Another important factor is to take a deep breath right after you finish your meal and eat in a quiet place. When there is excess kapha then consuming foods that are bitter, astringent or pungent is recommended. Consuming vegetables is good.


Those with kapha imbalance can have honey. You can eat most types of beans and you should aim to eat light and warm foods. You should ideally use heating spices such as cayenne pepper when you eat. People with pitta imbalances should eat bitter, sweet, and astringent tasting foods. You can have milk an hour post-meal or an hour before meals. You can have a limited amount of coconut oil or olive oil in your diet. You should have cooling herbs and spices in your diet. Another important aspect is to have whole foods and incorporate raw foods into the diet.
