One of the diseases of our modern times is diabetes. A disease previously not very prevalent has today become so common that even school children are suffering from the disease. Diabetes is where the blood sugar levels of a person are high and this can affect other organs of the body. It increases the risk of kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, and vision loss. Blood sugar level is tested after fasting for 10-12 hours. If the blood sugar level is 100 to 126 gm/dl, then it is considered prediabetes or borderline diabetes. When the blood sugar level is more than 126 mg/dl, then it is diabetes. A random blood sugar level of 200 gm/dl is also considered diabetes. It is important to get treated for diabetes to ensure that there are no serious risks.
The three doshas Kapha, Pitta, and Vata regulate the body’s functioning. If there is an imbalance in one or more of these doshas, it can cause diseases. Diabetes or madhumeha occurs due to the imbalance in doshas. Ayurveda gives a lot of importance to the concept of Agni or digestive fire. In Ayurveda, diet plays a very important role.
A poor diet, coupled with stress, lack of exercise, and other problems can weaken the Agni. As a result, it produces ama or toxins. These toxins can cause an imbalance in doshas leading to various problems. The three types of diabetes in Ayurveda are classified based on the dosha.
Kaphaja: Here, the Kapha dosha imbalance can cause indigestion, flu, lethargy and stomach problems.
Pittaja: Imbalance in the pitta dosha affects the bladders and can cause urinary infections. It can cause sleep apnea and acidity problems.
Vataja: Vata imbalance causes cold and cough, respiratory problems, constipation, and sleeplessness.
There are 20 types of diabetes described in Ayurveda. A doctor would suggest treatment based on the type of diabetes and the dosha imbalance.

When the pancreas is not able to function normally, it fails to produce insulin that regulates blood sugar levels. This does not absorb blood sugar and the levels in the blood increase. When this happens due to an autoimmune condition, where the pancreas cells are destroyed, then it is classified as Type 1 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is when the cells of the pancreas produce less insulin or if the body becomes resistant to insulin. This usually occurs due to a variety of reasons, including:
Genetics, where the parents or other family members also suffer from diabetes.
Those who are obese or overweight can make the body cells resistant to insulin and increase blood sugar levels.
Leading a sedentary lifestyle with little exercise increases the risk of diabetes.
A diet high in fats and calories can lead to diabetes.
Hormonal problems can also lead to diabetes, leading to increased sugar levels.
Those who are pregnant may suffer from gestational diabetes.
