If you have pain in the knee or any other joints and are facing this problem for a long time, you could be having arthritis. Most of them were because of knee problems as a result of arthritis. This is a disease that usually occurs among the elderly but it can even affect younger people. It is most common among those who are overweight. Arthritis involves inflammation of the joints. It can affect any of the joints but most commonly affects the knee making walking painful. When untreated, it can lead to permanent damage to the joints.

Ayurveda’s view on arthritis

Vata, pitta, and Kapha are the three energies of doshas that govern the body, as per Ayurveda. Any imbalance in these doshas can affect a person’s health. Of the three doshas, the Vata dosha is associated with air and empty space. It is the dosha that is related to arthritis.

The joints that have empty space is associated with the Vata dosha. The fluid within the joints is known as shleshaka Kapha. This fluid provides lubrication to the joints allowing it to move smoothly. When this fluid dries up, it creates an empty space and Vata can move toxins to this space.

Toxins are caused because of the weakness of Agni or the digestive fire. Environmental factors and a poor diet can reduce the power of Agni. This can lead to the accumulation of toxins or ama. Vata moves ama and it can occupy the empty space in the joints. This leads to swelling, inflammation, and pain, causing arthritis.

The other doshas are also associated with arthritis. Pitta dosha imbalance is what causes the Agni to become weak. The toxin ama is known for its wet and heavy characteristic, which resembles that of Kapha. If Kapha is strengthened, then it can get mixed with ama, increasing the problem of joint pain. Ayurveda, thus believes that arthritis is caused by a combination of all the three doshas.

The rheumatoid arthritis medication used by Ayurveda includes herbs and plants like Guggulu, Bibitaki, Triphala, Bala, Ashwagandha, and Boswelia. Apart from medicines, the Ayurveda treatment for arthritis focuses on eliminating ama or toxins. This is done through cleansing by using techniques like panchakarma treatment. This gets rid of the toxins and at the same time strengthens the Agni.

A healthy lifestyle with exercise and Yoga is recommended to treat arthritis. Diet is very important and the diet depends on which of the three doshas is more imbalanced. Depending on the diagnosis, a specific diet is advised, which needs to be followed.

Causes of arthritis

There are more than a hundred types of arthritis. The two main types are:

  • Osteoarthritis (OA): This is inflammation of the joints causing pain that happens due to normal wear and tear. The joints have cartilage that protects them, acting as a shock absorber. The cartilage loses its elasticity over time. It is also affected by excess pressure due to obesity. When the cartilage erodes away, the bones have no protection and this leads to joint swelling and pain. You have a stronger chance of getting osteoarthritis if it runs in your family.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): This is an auto-immune disorder. Here, the immune system in the body perceives the joint tissues as a threat. As a result, the synovium, a tissue in the joints is attacked. This, in turn, damages the cartilage and causes swelling, inflammation, and pain. Rheumatoid arthritis can not only damage the cartilage but can also destroy the bone. The causes of RA is not clearly known but is related to genetics.
