How is kwath made?

Generally, Ayurvedic herbs are not edible in their intrinsic form. There has to be a process to distil an herb's useful enzymes into edible form. Preparing a decoction or kwath of an herb is one of the most convenient ways to consume it. Plus, it's easy to make at scale.

Here's an overview of how kwath is made:

  • First of all, the herb is crushed to make a coarse powder.
  • One part of powder is added to 16 parts of water.
  • The mixture is then boiled at a medium-to-low flame until the water content reduces to 1/8th of what you started with.
  • The herbs are then filtered out, leaving a decoction behind, which should be consumed as instructed by your Ayurvedic practitioner.

Preparing a decoction at home can be difficult due to the unavailability of herbs in your area. Plus, cross-contamination is a major issue that is impossible to avoid with the limited means that you have. Also, boiling the mixture at a higher temperature might destroy the herb.
