How is kwath made?

Generally, Ayurvedic herbs are not edible in their intrinsic form. There has to be a process to distil an herb's useful enzymes into edible form. Preparing a decoction or kwath of an herb is one of the most convenient ways to consume it. Plus, it's easy to make at scale.

Here's an overview of how kwath is made:

  • First of all, the herb is crushed to make a coarse powder.
  • One part of powder is added to 16 parts of water.
  • The mixture is then boiled at a medium-to-low flame until the water content reduces to 1/8th of what you started with.
  • The herbs are then filtered out, leaving a decoction behind, which should be consumed as instructed by your Ayurvedic practitioner.

Preparing a decoction at home can be difficult due to the unavailability of herbs in your area. Plus, cross-contamination is a major issue that is impossible to avoid with the limited means that you have. Also, boiling the mixture at a higher temperature might destroy the herb.

To save you from all these challenges, Kerala Ayurveda provides readymade kwath or decoction of various herbs for multiple health benefits. Furthermore, these herbs are combined with other herbs to increase the bioavailability of the primary enzyme.

Advantages of taking kwath

An Ayurvedic herb can be processed into multiple forms: powder, tablet or decoction. While taking a herb in powder or tablet form might be convenient for most people, taking a decoction has its own advantages.

Kwath or decoction is easy to consume and digest, thanks to its minuscule particles, which are readily absorbed by the body. As a result, kwath has slightly higher efficacy than tablets and powder.

Almost all kinds of herbs can be processed into a decoction. Some examples are triphala kwath, dhanwantharam kwath, neem kwath, dashmool kwath, etc.

Unlike tablets, there's no risk of choking with kwath.
