It requires the use of an Ayurvedic oil for massage. The oil is to be gently massaged on the entire body. It takes time to do it. The Ayurvedic oil used is referred to as Sneha. This the Sanskrit phrase for oil. Sneha also means affection and love. It is loving care during an oil massage. 

When you massage your body, you need to show care and affection for your body. This kind of a loving approach will give you a feeling of warmth when you complete the massage. It creates a nourishing effect on the skin and the entire body. Before you start with the self-massage, you need to first choose the oil. Then you need to decide when you will do the massage. 

Initially start it once or twice a week. It will take time for you to learn the art of self-massage. Take a week or two to be adjusted to the routine. Once you are comfortable, you should be able to complete the process within 15 to 20 minutes. Then you increase the frequency to thrice a week or alternate days.  If you have time and comfortable with it, you can do  it every day to enjoy its total benefits. 

Next, decide the time of the day. Ideally, you need to do it early in the morning so that you can follow it with a shower. You can even do it in the evenings if you don’t get time in the morning. This will help you feel relaxed after a hard day’s work. You can go to sleep with the oil on your body so that it remains on the body until the next day when you can wash it off. This allows the oil more time to penetrate deep into your skin tissues. This allows you to experience the benefits of the massage better. Do this if you can avoid getting the bed oily. 

Having understood the frequency of the massage and the timing, it is now time to understand how to carry out a self-massage. The following is the suggested procedure to follow to carry out a self-massage: 

  1. Take around 5 to 10 ml of the oil in a cup and warm the oil. Don’t heat it too much as you can get burnt. Let it be moderately warm. Test the temperature with the tip of your finger before you start the massage. Since it takes more than 10 minutes, ensure the oil does not cool down before you complete the massage.

  2. You can do the self-massage in your bathroom so that it is easy to clear the mess. This will allow you to take off your clothes and do a complete massage. You can keep an old cloth or newspapers on the floor to avoid the floor becoming greasy. This makes it easy to clean up later. You will also avoid the risk of slipping and falling.

  3. You can sit down on a stool and do the massage or do it standing up depending on your preference.

  4. Dip the tips of your finger into the oil and use it for the massage. When you need to use your palm, then take a few drops on the palm and rub it on the palm fully before doing the massage.

  5. Start with the head. Start from above the temple and move towards the scalp region. Massage the scalp gently using circular motions. If you are using a skin care or hair care oil, spend more time massaging the scalp and then you can move on to the hair.

  6. Once you finish the head move to the face. Massage the earlobes, temple, forehead, cheeks, and the chin. Take extra care while massaging the eye socket and nose bridge as they are sensitive. Use a very light touch with your fingers to massage.

  7. You can then move to the neck, shoulders, and arms. Start with one hand and then move to the other. While massaging the face you must be gentle. When it comes to the arms, use more pressure so the oil goes deep into the tissues. Use long strokes as they help improve circulation. Use a circular motion on the elbow. Massage the fingers one by one.

  8. Use your palm to massage the chest and abdominal region. Use gentle, circular motions to carry out the massage. Do it slowly but don’t apply pressure. While massaging the abdomen, move in the direction of food flow. Start with the large intestine area and then move down.

  9. Move next to the legs. Just like the arms, use long strokes and apply pressure firmly. Spend time massaging the thighs and calves where you commonly feel pain. Use circular motions for massaging the knees.

  10. You can complete the massage by finishing with a foot massage. Massage the foot completely, including the toes. Then move to the sole. Use gentle strokes while massaging the foot. You can use circular motions while massaging the sole.  

  11. Since this is a self-massage, massaging the back is difficult. You can massage the shoulder blades and try to reach out to your back. Take care not to strain yourself when you massage your back. You can also massage your backside gently using circular motions. 

Once you are done with the massage, allow the oil to go deep into your tissues before you wash off. There are certain post-massage tips that you need to keep in mind. 

Note that a complete massage followed by a bath would take sufficient time. Make sure you plan your day to give yourself the time to complete the massage and bath. If you do not have time in the morning, avoiding hurrying up as it won’t give you the best results. If you are short of time, then do the self-massage on the weekends when you have time.
