Ayurvedic Approach to Treating Back Pain

Do you experience mild discomfort or crippling back pain that won’t let you sleep, work or lift heavy weights? Any back pain is annoying, and some people have been struggling with back pain for a long time. But you don’t have to.

Various reasons can cause back pain. Perhaps you had a hard fall, and your back hurts when strained or exposed to cold weather. Or, there might be an underlying condition, such as a herniated disc, causing pain while moving or stretching.

According to Ayurveda, it is essential to diagnose the root cause of the problem to find the most suitable, long-lasting cure.

Here are some common reasons for back pain that can be identified by performing a preliminary self-diagnosis.

Causes of Back Pain

Excessive strain on muscle or ligament

Your muscles and ligaments have a certain tolerance threshold, beyond which the muscle/ligament may tear and cause intense pain.

If you lift heavy weights or engage in activities that involve your back muscles and spinal ligaments, you are highly likely to experience fatigue, discomfort, and pain in the back.

Back pain is common among people working in unfavorable environments or exercising in a poorly maintained gym.

Before you realize it, mild discomforts in your back turn into more severe and frequent muscle spasms, which often impede work and personal commitments.

Ruptured or bulged discs

Discs are the cushions between spinal vertebrae, mainly responsible for preventing friction between the bones and allowing an adequate range of movement. Due to age, injury or illness, these discs may rupture or form a bulge that presses on a nerve. As a result, the patient may experience pain and restricted movement that often deteriorates into further risks and complications. Proper diagnosis is necessary for such situations, so get yourself tested as soon as possible.

Arthritis

One of the most common types of spinal arthritis, osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that occurs because of cartilage wear and tears and ‌affects the lower back region. A typical osteoarthritis patient experiences inflammation and pain in the lower back as the cartilage breaks down gradually.

Osteoporosis

It’s a condition wherein the bones become brittle and porous and develop tiny cracks, which result in extreme pain and stiffness.

Home Remedies for Back Pain

Your body can heal itself with simple home remedies. These remedies are more likely to improve your condition if you act fast. So, here are certain things you can do at home to treat back pain naturally.

muscle movement for back pain

Move Your Muscles

When you are grappling with back pain, it can be difficult to move around. So, start from your comfort zone with low-impact activities, like gentle stretching, basic yoga poses, a stroll in the park, swimming, etc. The goal is to move your muscles without straining them.

posture correction to prevent back pain

Posture Correction

Poor posture can lead to spine misalignment and backache. Because of hours of slouching at the work desk and little physical activity, most people develop back pain.. To prevent back pain, it is recommended to correct your posture first.

Some of the easiest ways to correct your posture are yoga, pilates, walking/jogging, swimming, and aerobic exercises.

If your job requires you to work long hours, take some time out to stretch your back, shoulders, and neck. Always attempt to maintain an upright posture while walking, standing, or sitting.

hot & cold compress for back pain

Hot and Cold Compress

Whether you should use a hot or cold compress depends on the cause of the back pain. If the pain occurs because of an injury, a sudden jerk, or a muscle pull, using a cold compress will numb your nerves and help reduce pain and inflammation.

If your back is aching due to fatigue, postural issues, or any underlying condition, then using a hot compress will stimulate blood circulation while providing warmth to inflamed tissues and promoting healing.

If the pain is unknown, a heating pad is a safe bet.

Stretching Poses for Quick Relief from Back Pain

Back pain is notorious for giving you sleepless nights, and you are often stuck in the same position with a restricted range of motion. However, you can work with that little range of movement to find relief from back pain. All you need to do is hold certain stretches for 20-30 seconds. Some of the recommended stretching exercises are:

Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)

Lie down on your belly and place the palm of your hands on the floor beside the shoulders. Try to lift your head and chest and go as far back as possible. Hold your stretch for a few seconds and return to your original position.

Repeat for 5-10 minutes, and you’ll feel better immediately.

Touching the toes

It’s a classic stretching exercise that is good for the back, hamstrings, shoulders, and neck. Do it for at least 10 minutes daily before meals to avoid severe back pains.

Bala Asana (Child pose)

Get down on your knees and sit on your heels. Lean your head forward contacting the floor, with your arms stretched as far out as possible, toward your head.

massage for back pain relief

Back Massage

A good-ol’ back massage can make everything seem alright. Give it a shot, and instantly feel relaxed and relieved from the pain. Use a herbal anti-inflammatory massage oil to get the most out of your massage session.

Start with a soft tissue massage and see how your body responds. If you feel comfortable, increase the pressure and duration to release muscle knots and promote blood circulation. A deep tissue massage works like a hot compress and delivers better outcomes in most cases.
